You can also try the compatibility button, (up in the address bar, looks like a page tore in half) this fixes most problems. Meaning your more safe having IE 9 on that box then a older browser not up to date. I'd re-install IE 9 on your box, just for the simple fact IE 8 has too many holes and leaves you with your pants down, if your viewing web content these days. I've seen that numerous times during my IT career. 
What one HTML syntax that works with one browser my not work well with the others. 99.9% of the time its the code behind the scenes that is why it's not working. I'd have to agree though, if you think it is the browser, try Firefox or Chrome to see if it's a HTML issue or a Web developer / programming issue with the page. Just like for Windows 8 soon to be released with just IE 10. When Win 7 was released it was only released I thought with IE 9.
